Fifteenth-century chapel; church of 1867; monastic buildings completed by 1914; twenty-first-century restoration
The monastery stands by the sea close to the tip of the Karpas Peninsula. The complex includes a medieval chapel, a neoclassical church built in 1867 and later monastic buildings.
Pilgrimage tradition connects the place with the Apostle Andrew and a spring. In the project material, this tradition is distinguished from the dating of the visible buildings and the documented history of restoration.
Our photographs show the church, arcades overlooking the sea, an icon of the Apostle Andrew and the condition of the complex during one of our visits. The bicommunal restoration has become a separate chapter in the monument’s modern history.
The chronology of the architectural elements and restoration was checked against material from UNDP Cyprus and the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage; religious tradition is identified separately.
