The Royal Chapel stands in the village of Pyrga between Larnaca and Nicosia. It was built in 1421 during the reign of King Janus of the Lusignan dynasty.
The Lusignans ruled Cyprus from 1192 to 1489, after Guy de Lusignan purchased the island from Richard I, the Lionheart.
The chapel preserves fifteenth-century paintings and numerous coats of arms. The imagery combines Byzantine tradition with western Gothic art, and beneath the image of Christ are King Janus and his wife Charlotte of Bourbon.
