In the twentieth century we place Cyprus within the global history of empires and decolonisation. British rule introduced new administration, infrastructure, a railway and new architecture, while the movement for self-determination also grew.
1878–1960
We present the struggle of 1955–1959 alongside political demands, diplomacy and the wider collapse of colonial empires rather than in isolation. Independence was formalised through the Zurich–London Agreements and proclaimed in 1960.
