Kourion and Greek inscriptions

The city on the cliff above the sea preserves a theatre, villas and elaborate mosaic floors with ancient Greek inscriptions.

Antiquity to the fourth century CE

Kourion is associated with a Mycenaean population of the Late Bronze Age. The city stands west of Limassol on a high cliff above the sea and was particularly badly damaged by earthquakes in the fourth century CE.

The site preserves a theatre, public buildings, an early Christian basilica, villas and mosaic floors. We pay special attention to fragments of ancient Greek text incorporated into the mosaic compositions.

The Greek alphabet arose around the eighth century BCE from the Phoenician script and consists of twenty-four letters. In Cyprus during the sixth and fifth centuries BCE, alphabetic Greek coexisted with the Cypriot syllabary.
