Antiquity
Tamassos lies in the village of Politiko near Nicosia. From what we observed, most of the ancient city has still not been excavated because it lies beneath the village and monastery.
The material describes the date and founders of Tamassos as unknown; its earliest literary mention is associated with Homer. The city was known for its copper mines and for a sanctuary of Aphrodite.
Two tombs regarded as royal have been found at the site. Our photographs show the remains of the Sanctuary of Aphrodite, the entrance to one tomb, a carved column and the interior chamber.
