Sixteenth century
The monastery stands near the village of Troulloi, not far from the Larnaca–Ayia Napa motorway. The name Mavrovouni means “black mountain”, although we smiled at the fact that the neighbouring hill looks red.
Vasily Barsky proposed a foundation in the middle of the sixteenth century, while the earliest documentary references date to 1728.
The monastery suffered several fires. During the most recent one, the upper part of the icon of Saint George was damaged and later restored. Information about the brotherhood refers to the time of our visit.
