Twelfth century
The monastery lies east of Limassol, close to the Limassol–Larnaca motorway and the village of Pentakomo.
There are several explanations for its name. One connects the foundation with three hundred monks who arrived during the Crusades, since the word “Alaman” means “German”. Another speaks of Orthodox monks of Greek origin who came after the fall of Jerusalem. A further legend tells of Suleiman, whom Saint George saved from a snake.
We noticed the unusual position of the church entrance on the south rather than the west side. The inner courtyard, arcades, bell tower and icon of Saint George help us understand the arrangement of an active women’s monastery.
