Twelfth century
The Monastery of Saint John the Baptist, or Timios Prodromos Mesopotamou, is traditionally associated with the twelfth century, although the first known written reference dates from the middle of the fifteenth century.
It stands in the mountains between two rivers—hence the name meaning “between the rivers”. We found it near Pano Platres, between Platres, Amiantos and Trimiklini.
The information about the monastic community in our early notes refers to the time of that journey; before a new visit we will check it again.
