The monastery lies near the road from Limassol towards the summit of Troodos. A narrow section leads from the main road and, in our experience, two cars can pass one another only with difficulty.
The foundation is dated to 1240, while the beginning of the story is associated with the discovery of an icon around 990. According to tradition, the icon was hidden in a small cave during the persecutions of the Iconoclastic period; the remains of two monks were found nearby.
The monastery burned down twice and was rebuilt each time. Information about the composition of the community refers to the period of our visit.
